Reggie Jackson to open new Hendrick Honda dealership in Raleigh
Hall of Fame baseball player Reggie Jackson and Charlotte-based Hendrick Automotive Group are teaming up to open one of the Triangle’s largest auto dealerships.
The 75,000 square foot Reggie Jackson Airport Honda dealership will open Jan. 4 on 19 acres at 9530 Lumley Road in Raleigh. It will be Hendrick’s largest facility in the region, eclipsing Durham’s Hendrick Southpoint Auto shopping center, which houses four franchises under one roof.
Jackson – known as “Mr. October” for his legendary performances in several World Series – has held a stake in the Rick Hendrick Chevrolet Naples of Florida since 2015. But the 1993 Hall of Fame inductee, five-time champion of the World Series, two-time MVP of the World Series League MVP sought a chance to start his own business.
“Reggie and Mr. (Rick) Hendrick have been friends for a very long time, and Reggie is delighted to be embarking on the business,” said Shaye Johnson, General Manager of the new dealership. “So that’s the Reggie dealership and Hendrick Automotive provides the operational support and everything in between. “
The Honda dealership will open with 300 new and used vehicles in the field. The complex will include 48 service bays, as well as a lounge, café-bar and snack bar.
“It really is a huge goal for the company and Reggie to deliver an exceptional customer experience,” Johnson said. “The living room is super big. We have a quiet space for people who want to join a conference call and open their laptop. We have a play area for the little ones, and for the older ones there is a playroom that is going to have arcade games and things like that.
Reggie Jackson Airport Honda will join more than 130 Hendrick franchises nationwide. Hendrick Automotive Group is the nation’s largest privately held automotive retailing organization with more than 10,000 employees, including 1,200 between dealerships Durham, Apex and Cary. Jackson’s dealership created 70 new jobs “and it’s not over,” Johnson said.
